Behind the Scenes: How SLM Nano Insulation Boards Are Made in Our Refractory Line
A walkthrough of the SLM production line, from fumed silica dispersion to opacifier dosing, hot pressing and final QC, and what buyers should check before trusting a data sheet.
Why the production process matters to the buyer
Not all nano insulation boards are the same. End performance depends on the raw materials, the dispersion process, the opacifier loading, the pressing pressure and the cure cycle. Understanding how the board is made helps you read a data sheet critically and ask the right questions of any supplier, including us.
Step 1: fumed silica dispersion
The base of every SLM board is fumed silica (SiO2) with a primary particle size of 7 to 40 nm. The silica is dispersed in water under high-shear mixing to break up agglomerates and form a uniform slurry. Poor dispersion creates density gradients in the finished board and degrades thermal performance. SLM uses multi-stage dispersion with inline viscosity monitoring so every batch stays within spec.
Step 2: opacifier and fibre dosing
Nano microporous insulation only works when the pore structure stays below the mean free path of air at temperature. An opacifier, typically TiO2 or SiC, is dosed in a controlled ratio to suppress infrared radiation through the board. Fibres are added for green strength before pressing. Both additions are metered by weight, not volume, to keep board density within a narrow band of the target.
Step 3: pressing and curing
The slurry is cast into moulds and pressed under controlled pressure. The press cycle determines final density and pore uniformity. Boards are then cured and dried to remove residual moisture. A board pressed too fast develops density gradients; pressed too slowly it may miss the compressive strength target.
Step 4: cutting and QC
Boards are cut to standard thicknesses from 6 mm up to 50 mm or to custom dimensions. Every production batch is sampled for density, thermal conductivity at several mean temperatures, and compressive strength. Batch test certificates ship with every pallet on request.
What this means for you
When you evaluate a nano insulation board supplier, ask three questions: how is the fumed silica dispersed, what opacifier is dosed and at what ratio, and can you ship batch test certificates with the order. The answers tell you whether the board will deliver the published numbers in your application.
